What to Expect in a Hypnotherapy Session

What actually happens in a hypnosis session? - Part one -

One of the most common questions I get is what actually happens during a hypnotherapy session. For many people, the fear of losing control stops them before even trying it.

So let me walk you through it.

A hypnotherapy session always begins with talking.

We sit down together. You arrive in the space. We get to know each other. Especially in a first session, this part can take some time.

During this conversation, a theme usually begins to crystallise — something that feels ready to be looked at more closely. You could think of it as a red thread that will guide us through the session.

After that, I invite you to make yourself comfortable, either on a chair or a couch. You lie down, find a position that feels natural, let your body become still, and gently close your eyes.

The way hypnosis is initiated can differ depending on the therapist. For me, what matters most is that you feel safe and relaxed, especially if this kind of work is new to you.

We begin with simple body awareness and deep breathing. Your attention slowly turns inward. The outside becomes quieter.

Hypnosis is not something that is done to you. It is a state we enter together.

It is a natural state of focused, inward attention — similar to the moment just before falling asleep, or when you are deeply absorbed in something.

From here, the actual work begins.

And this is what I will share with you in the next article.
